In Memory of Those HOF Members Who Passed

Doris “Dorie” Day – Contemporary Inductee in 2010. She was the wife of Medal of Honor recipient Brigadier General George “Bud” Day. She passed away on January 11, 2025, at age 95. She was a prominent military wife and advocate, particularly for prisoners of war during the Vietnam War, and was known for her courage and efforts to bring American POWs home. After her husband’s return, she continued to be a community leader in Florida, advocating for breast cancer patients and women’s rights.  The Bud and Dorie Day Patriots’ Trail in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, is named in honor of her and her husband’s significant contributions to military service.

Jean Dutton – Contemporary Inductee 2009. In 2010, she received a Florida Achievement Award from the Florida Commission on the Status of Women. Her husband, Col. Richard Dutton was a POW for 5 years and Jean worked with Dorie Day to bring the POWs home. Jean worked with the Crisis Line, helped open Shelter House for abused women and served as the executive director for 20 years. She was a role model and mentor to professional women and a compassionate financial donor to women in need. She was active in her faith with Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

Jane Strickland – Humanitarian Inductee in 2001. Jane was the first female executive of the Mental Health Association, raising awareness and reducing the stigma of treatment. She helped establish Shelter House and has served with dedication at Sharing and Caring and Healthy Start Coalition.

Dr. Naomi Barnes – Pioneer Inductee 2017. She was the first African-American female principal in the Okaloosa County School District, Edwins Elementary School in Fort Walton Beach. As a classroom teacher, she was recognized twice as the teacher of the year for Southside Elementary School. She received many awards and was a member of many local organizations.

Eileen Arpke – Education Inductee in 2004. Her contributions to education ranged from that of a classroom teacher at Ruckel Middle School to a member of the Board of Trustees with Okaloosa-Walton Community College. She also served as a member of the Institute of Senior Professionals with the College. She was known for her organizational skills.
